Meatball Sundae

I just finished reading Seth Godin’s new book, Meatball Sunday. I absolutely loved it. Seth does it again by explaining how New Marketing is king and whoever sticks to the old “secure” ways of Old Marketing will be left behind.

Basically selling average stuff, at an average price, to as many people as you can, won’t work anymore. As Seth points out in his book and Hugh MacLeod mentions in this article, “too many people are locked into the mass-market, neither-cheap-nor-remarkable bracket” and expect to receive attention. But attention is no longer free and easy to come by. With the wide variety of options available to us wherever we go (TV, Internet, etc) we now have the ability to choose what we watch, what we listen to, and who earns our attention. Yes, earn. The point that Seth makes is if we stick to the Old Marketing habits without embracing the ever changing dynamics of the New Marketing, people will take there attention and give it to someone else that creates something remarkable and worth talking about.

Backpack is an incredibly simple tool created by 37signals that acts as an information organizer and calendar. Great list-maker, perfect for to-do lists and other types of lists. Can be accessed from anywhere: home, work, Mac, PC, mobile. I especially like the to-do and reminder options and the ability to send notifications via SMS messages to my cell.

2. Highrise:

If you’re like me, you browse the web on multiple computers. 8. Google Calendar:

Along with Gmail and Google Reader, Google Calendar is my favorite Google application — allows you to keep your life organized easily, intuitively, and with no hassle. How to Link a Worpress Page to a Custom PHP File

Sometimes the most simplistic concepts can be hard to understand. For example, linking a WordPress Page to a custom PHP file should be relatively straight forward, however if one overlooks a few small steps along the way it can be extremely frustrating locating the source of the problem.

Why would anyone want to do this?

This allows us to use the infrastructure provided by WordPress while using a totally custom PHP file. By doing so, we can take full advantage of our custom PHP file while using the current theme inside WordPress. This is especially helpful when integrating an existing website with a blog created by WordPress.

Let’s say we want to create a WordPress Page in WordPress called “Archives” and link this new Page to a custom PHP file with code to display an archived list of our posts.

1. Create PHP File and Edit Template Name

Create a file called “archives.php” and open it up with your favorite text editor. Insert the following snippet of code in the top of your file.

<?php
/*
Template Name: Archives
*/
?>

This tells WordPress that this file is a “Template” and is named “Archives”. It is absolutely crucial that this be included in our archives.php file so WordPress can pick it up and use it accordingly.

In order for our archives.php file to actually do anything we would need to tack on a bit more code that would create a list of archived posts. There are several ways to do this but for starters here is a link that explains it a bit more in detail.

2. Upload PHP File to Server

We will need to locate the file directory containing our current WordPress Theme.

Example: blog/wp-content/themes/current-theme

This directory will contain all of the custom files associated with your WordPress theme.

Upload the “archives.php” file into your theme directory via an FTP server or whatever you use to upload files to your server.

3. Create a WordPress Page

Log into your WordPress admin interface and click on the “Manage” tab and the “Pages” tab respectively. Create a new Page and enter “Archives” in the Page Title field. Leave the main body text area blank. In the right column, find the “Page Template” box and select the “Archives” option from the drop down and click the “Save” button.

4. Take a Look

Now, go to the page you just created using your browser. The URL will be something like this: http://www.yoursite.com/blog/Archives

You have now successfully linked a WordPress Page with a custom PHP file using your current theme. Well Done!

The story of Kiwi who spends his whole life working towards achieving his dream. Very sad, indeed. But so beautiful, and so touching.

Scrat-Ice
Scrat, probably the coolest squirrel ever, still doesn’t have any luck.

Pixar — Lifted
Pixar’s latest short-film “Lifted”. Apparently, aliens also need to learn how to drive.

About the Author

My name is David Lano and I am passionate about learning everything I can from smart people (you). I can hardly pretend to be an expert in my writings, but will share my experiences and insights as I grow. I hope to instigate discussion in creating an online collaboration of innovative and unique content that is worth talking about.

The launch of a new blog is kind of like buying a complicated piece of electric equipment and bringing it home. You get it set up enough to turn on the ‘On’ button, but things still aren’t exactly how you’d like them — at least not until you’ve done a bit of tweaking, so please bare with me as I experiment.

If you have anything you would like to say about the design, usability, or structure of the site, or things you’d like to see, please share it in the comments on this post (or contact me directly). Nothing is set in stone and if something needs fixing, I’ll fix it. Your feedback will be both appreciated and listened to.
